Outcome Based Education (OBE)

What is Outcome Based Education (OBE)?

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honours offered by the School of Civil Engineering (SoCE), Universiti Sains Malaysia, is founded on the principles of Outcome Based Education (OBE). This student-centred approach emphasises clearly defined and measurable learning outcomes, ensuring graduates are not only technically competent but also capable of solving real-world engineering problems, communicating effectively, working collaboratively, and upholding ethical and professional standards.

Since the 2006/2007 academic session, the OBE approach has been fully embedded in the programme’s teaching, learning, and assessment practices. The curriculum is systematically aligned with Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) and Programme Outcomes (POs), in accordance with national and international engineering education standards.

The programme’s continuous commitment to quality and relevance has been recognised through uninterrupted accreditation by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) via the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) since 2009. Over the years, the programme has successfully progressed through multiple accreditation cycles, reflecting continuous enhancement in curriculum design, delivery, and outcome-based implementation. Most notably, following the EAC visit in 2024, the programme was awarded a full 6-year accreditation for the 2025–2030 cycle—a strong testament to its sustained excellence, academic integrity, and effective implementation of the OBE framework.
