RESEARCH AT USM
In line with the university's values of quality, equity, availability, accessibility. affordability, and appropriateness, USM has set its mission to be "a pioneering, trans-disciplinary research intensive university that empowers future talents and enables the bottom billions to transform their socio-economic well-being". such a remarkable mission is achieved through its 7 key APEX thrusts, which are Future-oriented, Unique, Sustainability, Humanity, Universality, Change, and Sacrifice. To that end, research at USM is driven by 3 main thrusts areas namely curiosity-driven, people-focused and industry-driven.
As the first university in Malaysia to adopt the "Blue Ocean Strategy", USM aspires to be a leader not only academically, but also in terms of contributing to the community by changing the lives of the bottom billions and enhancing their socio-economic well-being. The less fortunate should always be taken into consideration when transforming higher education in research and innovation. such a strategy indicates directions of R&I at USM in order to become a world class sustainabilituy0led research university.
USM continues to enhance its research edge and create new opportunities to help humanity, by establishing translational research centres working towards achieving scientific breakthroughs and creatiing new technology platforms in order to provide people-focused solutions. Only then can the university be considered relevant to the needs of the society and communities. In conducting research, USM has a different approach. It emphasises on creating an impact to the society by creating sustainable research products that are affordable and accessible to the poor and needy.
