PPKA First-Year Students Shine at BIM Challenge 2025 with Runner-Up Win


A total of five (5) first-year students from the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (PPKA) successfully participated in and represented the school at the BIM Challenge 2025 competition, organized by Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO), Ipoh, Perak, from 4 to 6 August 2025.
This individual-based competition, held at the international level under the Degree category, brought together students from various local and international higher education institutions. It aimed to enhance students’ competencies in Building Information Modelling (BIM), in line with the demands of the modern construction industry.
The Preliminary Screening Round was conducted online on 4 June 2025, where all participants were required to submit their respective BIM models by 12:00 noon. All five PPKA students successfully passed the screening and qualified for the Final Round.
Final Competition Schedule:
- Day One (4 August): Opening ceremony and competition briefing.
- Day Two (5 August): Competition day – participants were given six (6) hours to complete a 3D BIM model of a school building, which included:
- Architectural Model (LOD 300)
- Structural Model (LOD 200)
- Plumbing Model (LOD 200)
- Day Three (6 August): BIM Awareness Day with industry experts, followed by the announcement of results and closing ceremony.

Wan Muhammad Farris Firdaus was awarded Runner-up, receiving a plaque, a certificate of achievement, and RM500 in cash. The other participants each received a certificate of participation and a consolation prize of RM50.
On behalf of PPKA, we extend our highest appreciation to the organizers, especially Politeknik Ungku Omar, for their dedication in hosting this competition in a well-structured, professional, and impactful manner. In addition to providing comfortable air-conditioned accommodation, they demonstrated great attentiveness to student welfare. One of the most memorable experiences was the city tour of Ipoh, guided by PUO lecturers and drivers, where students observed real-world BIM applications in an invaluable learning opportunity.
