Facilities

Computer Laboratory

Used for the development of computer software and applications for mathematical modeling in different disciplines of Civil Engineering. It is equipped with Pentium PCs integrated into the School's LAN and networked throughout the whole campus. The laboratory is equipped with the latest softwares such as :

Geomatics Instrument Portal

The laboratory provides equipment for engineering measurements including analysis, collection and displaying of descriptive and coordinate information. The lab is equipped with instruments such as theodolites and levels, total stations, EDM, digital levels, GPS and laser equipment. The laboratory is also equipped with computer hardwares and softwares for mapping work, plotting and printing of engineering survey plans.

Heavy Structures Laboratory

With a strong floor of 6 m x 22 m of 600 kN capacity per meter grid and testing frames with a capacity of up to 2,000 kN maximum single point load, the laboratory is capable of carrying out full-scale tests for various structural elements, building components, pile capacity, etc. Major facilities include:

  • A set of Shimadzu 1000 kN UTM
  • One unit of 250 kN capacity dynamic UTM
  • Loading frames with various fixings 
  • Displacement and strain measuring facilities
  • Data acquisition system

Light Structures Laboratory

This teaching laboratory is equipped with facilities that could enhance the students understanding on theoretical aspects learned in Strength of Materials and Theory of Structures courses. It is equipped with the following equipment:

Concrete Laboratory

Provides engineering evaluation for building materials such as cement, aggregate, concrete and other cementitious materials based products. The laboratory is capable of carrying out all routine tests for compliance to National Standards. This laboratory is also equipped with various equipment for non-routine laboratory tests as well as on-site tests such as strain monitoring, tests for durability and performance related properties, assessment of materials and structures, etc. The tests conducted, amongst others include:

  • Compressive strength of concrete cubes
  • Compressive strength of concrete cylinders
  • Compressive strength of concrete cores
  • Compressive strength of bricks
  • Flexural strength of concrete beams
  • Tensile splitting strength of concrete cylinders
  • Performance and durability related properties for cementitious based materials
  • Microstructural properties of cementitious based materials (porosity and pore size distribution)
  • Physical and mechanical properties of aggregates
  • Tests for cement
  • Tests for mixing water
  • Various non-destructive and semi-destructive tests for assessment of concrete strength and durability
