Rapid development needs a new
paradigm in the context of preparing the urban drainage system
in Malaysia. This could be achieved with the implimentation
of Manual Saliran Mesra Alam (MSMA). MSMA provides guidelines
in controlling the quantity and quality of stormwater as the
main agenda for drainage system in urbanised areas.
Bio-Ecological Drainage Systems
or BIOECODS is a pilot project in USM Engineering Campus as
a result of a smart partnership between Universiti Sains Malaysia
and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Malaysia..
It is one of the alternatives listed in Urban Stormwater Management
Manual For Malaysia to create an environmentally friendly
development.
This new environmental-friendly system is based on "Control-at-Source"
concepts combining infiltration, detention storage, conveyance
to attenuate stormwater runoff. The removal of pollutant is
obtain through a series of best management practises which
provide treatment of the runof as it moves from the source
to the stream. Water that had been treated can be use again
or recycle through a few of detention storages which is designed
as wetpond or recreational pond.
