USM Won Third Place of Best Booth Award in the 3rd National Concrete Pontoon Competition 2015 (CPC2015)
Four final year students of the School Civil Engineering (PPKA) have again made USM proud for their success in the 3rd National Concrete Pontoon Competition 2015 (CPC 2015) held at Dewan Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) on 26-27 April 2015. The USM team composed of Liew Kok Kei, Chong Kim Wee, Lau Pi Hung and Vincent Soh Hang Guat has won Third Prize of Best Booth Award.
The competition was jointly organised by UTHM Jamilus Research Center, Concrete Society of Malaysia and Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UTHM. A total of 57 competing teams from universities, polytechnics and industries took part in this competition. The objectives of the competition were to develop creative work in designing and building of concrete structures and to promote a culture of sustainability by using waste materials.
Each team was required to produce a 500mm by 500mm with 100mm thick concrete pontoon. The pontoon must consist at least of 50% concrete of the total volume. The surface of the pontoon must be concrete without any coating and finishing. The concrete must achieve minimum compressive strength of 2.5MPa. Sustainable materials are encouraged to be used in the pontoon.
USM team has produced a pontoon from special concrete mix named “CORNCRETE”. The mix consists of Light Weight Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA), corn cob ash, rice husk ash (RHA), sand, cement and water. The compressive strength of the concrete is 17.0 MPa at Day 3. The concrete pontoon which consists of 40% void at the center can withstand the load up to 6 kg applied on the surface of the pontoon before the pontoon submerges in the water
Congratulations and well done to the team. The team has demonstrated exemplary level of creativity, problem-solving and communication skills, and teamwork. Sincere gratitude also goes to all PPKA staffs for their contributions in the competition.
