INTRODUCTION

Concrete is certainly the most widely used construction material in the world. However, in the absence of correct specifications, standard detailing, quality materials, good workmanship, thorough supervision and quality control, as well as routine maintenance, concrete structures can undergo premature deterioration. As a result of premature deterioration, there has been a steady increase in the number of concrete structures which are in need of urgent repairs.

Realizing the importance of this problem, the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia in collaboration with RNC Technology (M) Sdn. Bhd. is taking the initiative to organize the “4th Short Course on Concrete Durability, Assessment, Maintenance and Repair Techniques”. The previous three short courses have been successfully organized with overwhelming response from participants representing various Government Agencies and the Construction Industry.

This course is geared towards developing an understanding of the behavior of concrete in existing structures especially aspects related to durability and deterioration of concrete in structures located in tropical environments. Owing to extremities in relation to exposure conditions, problems affecting concrete in existing structures may be unique. Apart from discussing structural faults and failures, this course will also emphasize aspects related to assessment techniques and repair systems currently available to the user. In addition, the laboratory sessions will enable participants to gain hands-on experience in the use of related destructive, semi-destructive and non-destructive testing techniques. Case studies will be discussed for the benefit of participants in order to reinforce the importance of selecting the right approach to diagnose defects in concrete and to select the most appropriate repair technique.
